Project manager and process owner: two distinct roles

Project manager and process owner are different roles

Previously I discussed client-side project managers. Today, an equally important role that can save or sink implementation: the process owner.

It sounds technical. It is not.

Project manager and process owner are different roles. In small implementations with simple processes, one person may do both. Elsewhere, that invites delays.

The client-side project manager keeps the project on track, coordinates, monitors deadlines and escalates to management.

The process owner knows how things actually work. Not as written in procedures or imagined by the director, but in everyday practice.

We need that person because we configure ERP for reality, not theory.

They bring answers to workshops and understand the reasons behind their questions. They check configurations against daily work and ensure their teams adopt the new process.

Without them, or with a messenger in their place, workshops waste time.

Who owns purchasing, warehouse or production processes in your company?

Do they know it themselves?
